Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?
Questions and Answers with Dr. Stephen Sinatra, M.D., F.A.C.C.

Cardiologist Stephen Sinatra's fascinating series of articles on Earthing ( read all five parts here ) has triggered many questions from readers.  Dr. Sinatra answers some of them here, and will do so again.  His book is Earthing:The Most Important Health Discovery Ever?

Question: Why do you believe that Earthing, or grounding as you also call it, is so important?

Answer: This is absolutely a landmark discovery. Imagine, here we are living in the technology age, and right under our feet, on the ground that we walk on, may be the most comprehensive, powerful, and natural healing tool at our disposal.  The Earth itself!

I have seen, via microscope images, the Earth's energy change thick, ketchupy blood within 40 minutes into a thinner, more wine-like consistency. In my own field of cardiology, this phenomenon has huge promise.

Thick, sludgy blood is the hallmark of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.  We need good studies to prove it, but anecdotally I have observed wonderful improvements on blood pressure, arrhythmias, and in people suffering with the complications of diabetes.

If we connect directly with the surface of the Earth, and its unlimited supply of free electrons, either by being barefoot outside or sleeping and working indoors in contact with conductive sheets or mats, we appear to have at our disposal the most powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, painkiller, stress-buster, and jet lag defuser available.

Humans evolved grounded. In contact with the Earth. The research strongly confirms observations made over the last 12 years that when we reconnect with the Earth we feel better.

It has not been proven yet, but those of us intimately familiar with Earthing believe that a significant cause of chronic inflammation and chronic illness may be lack of grounding, a lack of connection to the Earth and its omnipresent and boundless supply of free electrons.

A cause of many of man's current ills could very well be an electron deficiency because we live insulated from the Earth. Positively- charged free radicals, that drive the chronic inflammation process at the heart of multiple major diseases as well as premature aging itself, appear to be neutralized or otherwise curbed, when individuals ground themselves.

Grounding infuses the body with a massive influx of negatively-charged electrons. People with pain often experience pain relief within minutes, a consequence, we believe, of widespread free radical neutralization. They feel more energized. They sleep better. They feel more calm.

These are just some of the reasons why I regard Earthing as the most important discovery I have encountered in my many years of practicing medicine.  We really and truly live on a global treatment table - the Earth.

Question:  A Paleolithic diet ( also known as a primal or caveman diet ) is based upon eating foods that humans have genetically adapted to over two million years rather than the foods of modern farming and food processing . Are Earthing principles based on the same idea that what our ancestors adapted to over tens of thousands of generations might benefit us today?

Answer: Correct.  Humans evolved walking and sleeping on the Earth.  Science has now revealed that the body absorbs the gentle, natural electric energy on the surface of the Earth. Inside the body, this energy appears to stabilize the bioelectrical circuitry, reduce inflammation, and serve the physiology in many ways that translate to better health and function.

Question:  If tens of thousands of years ago we would have been grounded while walking or standing, are the soles of the feet more sensitive than the rest of the body to the effects of Earthing?

Answer: It certainly appears that way.  The sole of the foot is richly covered with some 1,300 nerve endings per square inch, more than found on any other part of the body.

Wonder why there are so many nerve endings concentrated there? It seems clear that Nature, in a time well before shoes came along, designed things this way to keep us directly "in touch" with the Earth. The paws of all animals are equally rich in nerve endings.

Moreover, at the upper part of the sole, just below the ball of the human foot, is one of the most important acupuncture points, the kidney 1 (K1) point. This energy point feeds into and intersects with other major acupuncture meridians throughout the body. K1 thus appears to be one of the major gateways of Earth energy into the body.

Question: In your book Earthing: The Most Important Health Discovery Ever? you describe an experiment you conducted at your home where guests (including fellow physicians ) had their blood drawn and then after forty minutes grounding had their blood drawn again. The two samples were compared for viscosity. The images in the book show a dramatic thinning of the blood after the forty minutes of Earthing. How long would that blood thinning effect be expected to last?

Answer: Assuming a person who is usually not grounded (and has not been grounded in the past few days), the effect would not last very long. Our research shows that the changes on other physiological parameters last at least 20 minutes after 40 minutes of Earthing and then start to fade away slowly. By the next day there is no discernible effect left.

We expect a similar situation with blood thinning.  Keep in mind that this is a research setting designed to measure changes during Earthing.  From our experience, the benefits to health result from incorporating Earthing into one's lifestyle, such as sleeping grounded, on a regular and continual basis.

Question: If the blood gets thinner with Earthing, is there a danger from Earthing regularly and then suddenly stopping? Like the rebound effect that can occur with suddenly stopping some medications?

Answer: No one is Earthed 24/7, so the body is naturally in an on-off mode.  If someone, however, is Earthing regularly and then stops, the blood, along with the rest of the physiology, will generally resort back sooner or later to its pre-grounding condition.  Thus, it is important to keep grounding to enjoy the benefits.
