Anybody have any experience with red yeast rice for lowering cholesterol?
I just read about it in a newsletter from a Dr. Jonathan Wright but no details.

I believe the active ingredient is lovastatin under a different name, that is lovastatin as found in Mevacor. So a more dilute HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor than a prescription statin but similar mechanism of acitivity I think. Never tried it personally.

Redyeast rice

Bad move, I heard about the redyeast rice to, went on it after I had terrible side effect on lovastatin. The side effects from the statins were improving and after taking redyeast for a week they came back with a vengeance, did some research and it's about the same as taking statin
drugs.

Thanks Fran and others - I thought as much. I had read somewhere about what a safe alterntive to statins RYR would be but got to thinking - if the ingredient is the same it has to be risky also.
