Dr. Graveline's 12 supplements

Postby pattyann » Sun Aug 15, 2010 11:10 am

Help!
I bought 2 of Dr G's book. In Statin Damage Crisis he gives the 12 supplements he recommends. I have been all over the book ... underlining ... looking up ... etc. Some I have figured out (maybe) what he recommends. Others ... I can't figure it out.
Please, can someone on here list the supplements, brand, dosage and time to take these supplements. And in some cases ... glyconutrient, coq10 and others ... where to buy these supplements.
I want to get better and feel these supplements might help me. That's why I bought the books.
Finding out about the Kaneke form of CoQ10 was wonderful. I have been taking the wrong CoQ10 for years!
I am so confused. In aged garlic extract he says: "one capsule of the liquid preparation 3 times a day". From my lay knowledge, a capsule contains powder. He says "liquid preparation". Is he talking about a soft gel? If so, there is only one soft gel listed. Is it the one with the additives that he suggests? There are many aged garlic extracts available from the same company but which one does he suggest. I don't want to spend the money and time taking the wrong one. Taking the wrong pill won't give the result that Dr G recommends.
I am sorry to be so discomboogled. But I have been at this for several weeks and still can't figure it out.
Thanks!

12 Supplements

Postby Nancy W » Wed Nov 17, 2010 9:25 am

pattyann,

I was just reading unanswered posts and came upon yours. I think many of us have done just what you have done. In my reading on this site over the last year or so, I tried to figure it all out, too. Some of the "regulars" have written about what they take, but I have not found a comprehensive list from Dr. Graveline, nor anyone else.

Recently Dr. Graveline published his newest book as an e-book. It is called The Dark Side of Statins. I got it through Kindle. It takes his research a step further and gets into the biochemistry of the damage done to the mitochondria. He does talk a bit more about the supplements and you might find it helpful. I really appreciated this small book. It was packed with information.

But, for me, the bottom line has been to work with a naturopath and to fine tune which of the supplements are most helpful, in which doses. I was, a year ago, taking fistfulls of vitamins. Initially, it seemed the only relief I could get was high doses of most of what was on that list. In time, my symptoms improved and the naturopath halved the doses. My pain returned shortly thereafter. We upped the doses again, then, in time, slowly tapered as my symptoms continued to decrease. Six months into my "statin (mis)adventure," I revisited the naturopath. At that point, we settled on fewer supplements, and I found one supplement from Thorne called Neurochondria, which had a combination of some of the things Dr. Graveline had talked about. This, along with fish oil and vitamin D3, seems to be the minimum number of supplements that hold my neuropathic pain at bay. We have played with the dose, up and down, for months.

It is a relief not to have to swallow so many supplements, and it is more affordable, too.

At this point, 16 months after all this began, I have figured out the minimum dose I need to take. If I skip two doses (AM/PM) some of the neuropathy creeps back in my toes, in my face, in my hands. A couple of weeks ago, I ran out of the Neurochondria and couldn't get back to the naturopath for like four days. by then the neuropathy was more widespread and the pain was bad. Once I began taking the Neurochondria again, it took four days more for the pain to go. It became very clear to me that, at this point, for me, I definitely need what is in that supplement!

I still get fatigue, and coming back from that has taken months to get to the point where I am now. One gauge has been the lawn mower. When I began mowing last spring, I would think I was going to fall over dead when I had the lawn half mowed. I would stop and start, so very fatigued. Now I mow the lawn completely in half the time. I still get tired, especially if the grass is high and damp, but nothing like last spring. My next guage will be snow shoveling, hehe. Also, I was doing deep water aerobics at the time of the statin insult, five days a week, maintaining an aerobic pace for 60 straight minutes. My exercise tolerance fell to less than ten minutes, not at an aerobic pace, within a few weeks after the initial neuropathy. The fatigue was tremendous! I had to stop for months, but have gradually returned to the class. At first, in September, I could only do 30 minutes, then get out. Now I can stay in there for 60 minutes. I have yet to be able to work at an aerobic pace, except for the occasional "sprint."

I would guess that Dr. Graveline walks a fine line in his books between recommending and prescribing. Everyone of us is different, so it is difficult to say what works...and what doesn't. Hope you have found some helpful supplements for you!

I appreciated this thoughtful reply, Nancy. I will look into the neurochondria & see if I can reduce the extraordinary # of things I take daily/weekly.

Best,

supplements

Postby BDavis » Fri Dec 24, 2010 10:08 am

PattyAnn, I understand your frustration. I think we all want a fix to this problem. I haven't tried all the supplements but do take 3 3xday along with my HP meds. If I miss one dosage of supplements I'm down and out.

I think the idea of a Naturopath is a good one. I recently had a friend say she goes to one for her hotflashes. That alone spiked my interest. I think my problem is that I don't trust anyone in the medical field after seeing so many so called specialist only to be ignore and left to waste away.

If you come up with the list, pls post.

Merry Christmas,
BeLinda

PS I see you live in Tampa, I'm directly east of you in Vero Beach.

Thanks Phil,
My New Years resolution is to spare no cost and find the best supplements I can get. I mean I'm already saving money by not going to doctors if I can possibly help it, right!

I haven't posted on here for a few years. I am very happy to see some of you are finally looking in to natural supplements. I posted a long list of what my homeopathic/wellness doctor put me on a couple years ago. It is very costly and the amounts change from time to time depending upon how I feel, but I can do much more that I could when I was taking nothing.

Also, as others have said what works for one person may not work for the next person. We are all made up differently and one might need more or less of a supplement.

Pqq

Postby BDavis » Sat Jan 22, 2011 5:28 pm

I stated the Life Extension Mitochondrial Energy Optimizer with BioPQQ a little over a week ago. I'm taking the recommended dosage of 4 tab a day. It includes Acetyl-L Carntine 675 mg, so I could cut back some on the individual dosages of that, which cuts some of the cost. I like that it has B6, as well.

I can't really say if it's helping yet, though I feel the "fog" has lifted and I don't feel like I walking through life drunk. I was getting to the point I questioned if I should be driving. Again I'm 53yrs old!

I bought my bottle of the supplement though The Vitamin Shoppe @ $65 US. I had a $10 coupon, so that helped.

SusieO, it's nice to see you back. How are you feeling?

I have found taking the supplement out of the mix works better for me. When I first tested my Homocysteine Cardiovascular levels and need to lower them.

I got a Multi-Homocysteine supplement with all the Vit.'s in one Tablet my levels never moved. So after talking to a friend that works as a aid to a Dr. and is trainer. I got the Supplements needed to lower Homocysteine and take them separate.

Then my levels came down and I gave the Multi a good 4 months. Here is a list of all the supplement I am on as /my Dr.'s.
I have a lot of health problems I have a Pituitary Problem my brain dose not tell my body to make Hormones so I need to take Testosterone, Cortisol, Thyroid and Iron for low Ferritin. Because I am on Testosterone I need to take meds to keep my Estradiol levels down.
SusieO, it's nice to see you back. How are you feeling?
BeLinda
Hi BeLinda! Nice of you to ask how I am. I was doing pretty good and then I had some tests done because it seems I have a problem with gluten and my blood sugar level is not great. I am not diabetic, but no matter if I eat healthy or splurge and eat "bad" my sugar levels do not change.

My wellness doctor changed some of my supplements and I have to add a new one every 3 days due to how sensitive my system is. Well, the ones he gave me for blood sugar control contain niacin and after taking 3/day of 2 different types I was in pain in my hands/fingers/arms/chest/legs/feet you name it I had pain. So, I came back here for a bit of memory refreshment and it dawned on me "it is the darn niacin". I found I can handle very small amounts and this was too much for me. So, I am backing off on the supplements and giving my body time to rest and regroup.

I am much stronger and can still walk 5 miles 2 or 3 times a week and the other days I walk in the woods with our dogs and do about 2 miles. I still have problems if I stand in one spot too long i.e. standing waiting for a parade or my turn on a ride at Disney World, if I have to ride in the car for more than an hour I feel it in my legs and 3 hours is the max. If we have to travel more than 3 hours we have to stop and spend the night or my legs are so sore I am in tears.

I am not complaining just stating how I am - I am so thankful I feel so much better and can do so mucn more once I found the supplements. However, this statin injury will never go away it is always there lurking waiting to return if I over do it or if my supplements are changed.

I hope things are going well for you! :D

Postby BDavis » Tue Feb 08, 2011 10:49 am

Susie, I read your abilities and I'm so envious. I want so much to walk for long distances like I used to. I realize that your life and your health have been altered from your normal life and you have to manage pain everyday but it sounds like you are hanging in there, good job.

I started back in mid Jan with PQQ and I have to say I think it has helped.
What I notice most is my attitude. I'm not as depressed and the fog has lifted. My mind thinks I can do more than my body can but I have hope. At first I thought it might be that I was just excited about my Granddaughter coming for a visit but she has left now and I still feel a lighter heart.

Attitude has so much to do with how you feel and what you can push through. I'm hopeful for physical improvement around the corner.

Take care,
BeLinda

Blood sugar issues

Postby Nancy W » Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:21 pm

Suzie O, I just posted on an article I read on Dr. Mercola's website about statins and how they affect blood sugar. Here is the link:

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/artic ... betes.aspx

Might be helpful, or worth reading, anyhow. I found it interesting.
