We pointed out in previous posts that WAP Foundation guidance is misguided.

Ellen Jaffe Jones says:
As a former investigative reporter, and after watching everyone else in my family get really sick or really die from heart disease, diabetes and cancer, I began the investigative reporting job of my life to escape my doctor-predicted similar fate. During the past 25 years I've done all the diets and the 2 times I went high protein, lo carb, my total cholesterol climbed from 130 as a vegan (where most non-potato chip healthy eating vegans are), to 203. In 6 months. Went right back down as soon as that ended. The big problem with Atkins is it is a huge money-making machine that sells many products. As a reporter, I was trained to follow the money. When you understand there's no money in broccoli, then you understand why you have to be your own reporter. Look at the plant-based docs who embrace this way of eating, because they see how well it works, and you'll find most of them are not selling any vitamin supplements or bars to serve their self-interests. Dr. Campbell is one of many who has done the research and does this for no other reason than out of the goodness of his heart. I run 5Ks and place in my age group, run half marathons and at 57, always get told I look at least 10 years younger. Check out the vegan athlete sites like *www.organicathlete.org or the many vegan body builder websites. Many in the younger generation use a plant-based diet to enhance performance. And as Dr. Campbell and others point out, in the cultures of the world that can't afford meat and dairy, the diseases that destroy us here are non-existent. When the financial incentives for corporations disappear, then I'm sure they'll become the voices for broccoli.

Indigenous cuisines offer clues about what humans, naturally omnivorous, need to survive, reproduce and grow: traditional vegetarian diets, as in India, invariably include dairy and eggs for complete protein, essential fats and vitamins. There are no vegan societies for a simple reason: a vegan diet is not adequate in the long run.

All essential nutrients are in plants! Plus: Ponder this:

In our evaluating the best nutrition, ponder these two worthy inputs:
<<
Peace On Earth

Isn't man an amazing Animal? He kills wildlife -- birds, kangaroos, deer,
all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice, foxes, and dingoes
-- by the millions in order to protect his domestic animals and their feed.

Then he kills domestic animals by the billions and eats them. This in turn
kills man by the millions, because eating all those animals leads to
degenerative -- and fatal -- health conditions like heart disease, kidney disease,
and cancer.

So then man tortures and kills millions more animals to look for cures for
these diseases.

Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and
malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic
animals.

Meanwhile, some people are dying of sad laughter at the absurdity of man,
who kills so easily and so violently, and once a year sends out cards
praying for "Peace on Earth."

The McDougall Newsletter - December 08 Vegans Are Ripe For Change
Being vegan says to me this is a person with outstanding character.
Vegans are self-sacrificing and committed to making a difference. When
everyone else is certain that it is our God-given right to mistreat and kill cows,
pigs, chickens, and fishes in order to be properly nourished; a vegan would
rather risk protein and calcium deficiency than to harm these beautiful creatures.

Of course, this deep sacrifice ends with the discovery that plants provide all
needed proteins, amino acids, essential fats, vitamins, and minerals (including
calcium) without the inherent risks of flesh and dairy.

Vegans are self-confident. They remain steadfast even when mom, dad, dietitian,
and doctor are visibly angered by their religion of “veganism.â€Â

Hello:

If I might, let me suggest we ignore this topic and the source. This is become a soapbox for an off topic discussion at best, and a product promotion platform at worst. A vegan diet is NOT designed to ameliorate the side effect results of statin therapy (which is the true thrust of this forum). We should keep our eye on the ball. The discussion has deteriorated into a verbal fist fight, and I'm sure we all have better ways to expend our energies; I know I do. :?

Best,

Brooks

Dear Dr. Pam: What is your opinion of the Paleo Diet?

The Paleo Diet was popularized in a book of the same name written by Loren Cordain. I have heard Dr. Cordain speak, and while I respect his intellect, I disagree with his conclusions. Dr. Cordain claims that people thrive on a diet based on lean meats and fish, non-starchy vegetables, and fruits. He offers as evidence the fact that Paleolithic people thrived on such a diet and that we are genetically designed to eat the same diet as our ancestors.

The evidence does not support his statements, however. I have challenged many people who advocate this diet to provide published evidence of a successful modern population that lives on such a diet, or evidence showing that this diet prevents, stops the progression of, or reverses degenerative disease. No one has provided such evidence. We do have such evidence to support a well-structured plant-based diet, so I'll continue to recommend it.

Another issue is that I, along with many researchers, question the assertion that our ancestors ate a meat-based diet. Paleolithic humans had no technology to assist them in hunting and killing prey, and were considerably slower than most of the animals they pursued. At the time, there was no way to preserve meat for future use. Although our ancestors did eat meat and fish, the fact that these foods comprised the majority of the diet remains unproven.

But this becomes somewhat irrelevant because we are not hunter/gatherers or cave dwellers any more. I have asked two questions of every group I've spoken to in the last year:

(1) are there any hunter/gatherers or cave dwellers in this audience, or do you know anyone who fits this description?

(2) Are there any baby calves in attendance?

The answer to both is always "no." We can then agree not to talk about Paleolithic diets or cow's milk since there are no constituents for whom these diets or foods would be appropriate.
