My dad, who is 81, took crestor for 1 1/2-2 years. He was fine for a long time and then started developing all sorts of seemingly unrelated symptoms and also horrible leg cramps and pain. He had to start walking with a cane as it was so awful for him to try and get around. At that point I went online and researched the medications he was on and happened upon this website. It was quite an eye opener, and I'm sorry to see that so many people have been so negatively affected by this drug.

My dad's been off crestor for 3 months now. He's seen some mild improvement but still has pain and trouble walking so doesn't do very much of it. Stairs are extra difficult. He asked if I could find out if anyone has suggestions for things he could be doing or taking to try to improve - so I would really appreciate any suggestions you have.

Thank you so much,
Iris

Iris,

I took statins for ten years, the last five on crestor. I had severe leg and back pain to the point where I couldn't stand. I found this sight and started healing that day. You will find a lot of good information here.

The first thing I think everyone here on the forum would suggest for your father would be a supplement called L-Carnitine, for the pain. Next would be a supplement COQ10. If you Google these to supplements you will get a lot of information.

After a little over two years off statins I am much better but not back to my old self yet, soon though I hope.

Read my other posts by clicking on my profile. Also ck. out other profiles and find out what other people in your dads position are doing.

There is a member of the forum adec, you should read. This member helped ageing relatives back to health after statin damage.

Best to you, and your father, welcome to our forum. Keep us posted as to your Dads progress.

Craig

New information is available for the correction of Statin induced myopathy. The following supplements (in addition to daily vitamin/mineral supplements) are now thought to help repair damage done by statin drugs:

TriacetlyUridine - to improve mitochondrial function
**http://www.nutrimedical.com/products.jhtml?method=view&product.id=3312

UBIQINOL - also known to you as reduced CoQ10
**http://shop.solacenutrition.com/product.php?productid=16148&cat=253&page=1

CREATINE - for muscle repair/building
**http://shop.solacenutrition.com/home.php?cat=256

D-RIBOSE - for mitochondrial energy (fuel)

Magnesium Orotate - More bio-available form of magnesium
**http://www.iherb.com/Nutrient-Carriers-Incorporated-Advanced-Research-Magnesium-Orotate-500-mg-100-Tablets/6091?utm_source=g&utm_medium=x&at=0

Creatine and D-Ribose may not be required, but they are typical supplements for mitochondria recovery.

Acetyl L-Carnitine is also recommended at one to two grams/day; more if your bowel can tolerate it.

The sites recommended above are for your convenience in ordering. You may; of course, order these things from the supplier of your choice.

Important you know I am not a Dr. or a scientist. I am a fellow sufferer searching for a remedy. These recommendations are made based on research being done in Australia, the E.U., and by one of our own contributors.

I take these things (some begun as recently as the past three days - Magnesium orotate and Triacetyl Uridine). In normal, recommended dosages there is nothing harmful in these supplements that I know about, but final decisions are yours. I hope your father improves.

Best,

Brooks

I would add one thing to the already excellant responces that you have recieved.....

Many of us suffer from joint/tendon pain in addition to the muscle cramps/pain/weakness. If this is true in your fathers case you can add DMSO to your shopping list.

mix with distilled water as directed, apply, wait 5-15 min and wash area with soap and water....
one application may work to reduce pain for an extended period

remember to remove the quotation marks from the links provided

best of luck to your father

David
