Two articles on statin sides & the hypercholesterolemia

This is an article written by Joel M. Kauffman, Ph.D. who is a professor of Chemistry Emeritus. It's a critical review of statins risk/benefit clinical research.

Some important excepts from the article includes:

......."Many well-funded sources attempt to justify the wide use of the statin drugs to lower TC and LDL by citing references in support of the claims that high levels of TC and LDL have been correlated with cardiovascular disease. Such claims are unfounded, since high TC and LDL are well-correlated with age, which is a risk factor.[1,2] With age removed, there is almost no correlation, and certainly none that allows a worthwhile prediction of risk for a given individual."

......."Besides cancer, the other side effects of statins listed were incomplete, and should have included constipation, myalgia, myopathy, polyneuropathy, liver and kidney damage, congestive heart failure and amnesia. Side-effects are usually said to affect 2-6% of patients. In fact, a recent meta-analysis noted side-effects in 20% of patients above the placebo rate (65% vs. 45%), and no change whatever in the all-cause death rate for atorvastatin."

......."Statins are commonly used at a dose to lower TC to < 160 mg/dL, a level noted in the report of a NHLBI conference to be associated with higher cancer rates."

......."Statins decrease the body’s production of the essential coenzyme Q-10 and dolichol, among other things. Low Q-10 levels are strongly associated with congestive heart failure."

......."Atorvastatin and simvastatin are the statin drugs most likely to cause memory loss."

Here's a July 12th, 2007 article from HealthSentinel.com, which examines the May 2007 study in the American Journal of Cardiology. This study is related to the detelirious effects of statin usage and CoQ10 depletion. It's called, "Effect of Coenzyme Q10 on Myopathic Symptoms in Patients Treated With Statins."

Some important excepts from the article include:

......."Studies have shown that blood levels of CoQ10 drop by 25% to 50% after statin treatment."

......."The fact remains however that statins interfering with CoQ10 synthesis resulting in negative consequences for patients have been known for quite some time."

......."A study in the May issue of The American Journal of Cardiology examined the use of CoQ10 supplements to improve muscle symptoms in patients being treated with statins.... at the end of the month the patients who were reporting statin related muscle pain that received the CoQ10 showed “decreased muscle pain by 40% and improved the interference of pain with daily life activities by 38%â€
