Statins for children

MSNBC had an article today on heart disease in children, and of course the docs being interviewed said that we need to start getting children on statins, early.

Imagine what this will do to growing children!

I'll bet the big pharmaceuticals rationalize it from a marketing standpoint. Almost like major television networks trying to maximize their advertising dollars and increase market saturation in every demographic. Of course you want to play up the benefits, and hide all of the dangers and/or risks. I even seem to remember a symposium where statins were recommended for the watersupply.

So I guess it depends on who has the biggest lobbyists at any one time, either the fast-food and tobacco industries or the pharmaceuticals. Of course, there's not very much money in being a nutritionist or a purveyor of health-food or supplements.
