UK proposing to give statins to many more people!

Postby Cath123 » Thu Mar 27, 2014 3:17 pm

I happened to see this announcement on the UK NICE web site 'Thousands more could be offered Statins'.

Reading in horror I see that "In an update to the existing guideline on lipid modification, NICE is proposing that the threshold be halved for offering statins to people to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD), the cause of 1 in 3 of all deaths in the UK. Currently, only people with a 20 per cent or greater 10-year risk of developing CVD are offered statins. Draft guidance now recommends offering statins to people who have a 10 per cent or greater 10-year risk of developing CVD."

And this in a country which already has guidelines to get total cholesterol down to a ridiculously low 4 mmol/l (154 mg/dl) for patients with cardiovascular risk.

Is there no end to the stupidity and evil of humans!!
