cholesterol and all cause mortality

The following data is calculated from a study done in Japan in 2002 on 41,841 people from 35 to 70 years old, 2/3 of which were male. These patients were all on low dose statins (either 5 mg or 10 mg) the average reduction in TC was 18.4% , the average reduction in LDL-C was 26.8% and the average reduction in TG was 16.1%. This study is on the net for free (link below) and the data grouped by levels of TC, LDL-C, AND HDL-C and is included for all to see. I have done the calculations for the actual risks per 1,000 subjects (shown below) to make it clearer as only the the relative risks are provided in the study linked below.

Here is the link to the study and data:

Tables 4,5 and 6 show the data from which the following were calculated

Following are the figures for actual events or deaths derived from the study data

CARDIAC EVENTS

TC...........................RATE/ 1000

<180........................... 5.5

180-199........................ 4.9

200-219......................... 3

220-239........................ 4.2

240-259........................ 6.8

>260............................ 10

the lowest rate of cardiac events occured at a TC of 200-219

LDL-C

<100............................ 3.4

100-119.......................... 4

120-139......................... 3.4

140-159......................... 4.5

160-179......................... 7.3

>180............................. 14

CARDIAC DEATHS
TC

<160............................ 8.6

160-179......................... 2.4

180-199.......................... 2

200-219......................... .96

220-239......................... 1.4

240-259......................... 2.9

260-279......................... 2.8

>280............................. 6

Now the most disturbing, the all cause death rates versus total cholesterol and LDL

TC

<160............................ 6.0

160-179......................... 3.7

180-199......................... 2.2

200-219......................... 1.7

220-239......................... 1.66

240-259......................... 1.46

260-279......................... 2.3

>280............................. 3.1

LDL-C

<80............................... 3.5

80-99............................. 2.3

100-119........................... 2.2

120-139........................... 1.7

140-159 .......................... 1.7

160-179............................1.9

180-199........................... 1.8

>200,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 3.4

This information should cause everyone to re-examine thier beliefs on the link between cholesterol and mortality and longetivity! lowering cholesterol to the levels recommended clearly increases the risk of early death.
