surgery and statins?

Postby samfreddyc » Thu Mar 09, 2006 12:39 am

in getting set for knee surgery was asked if i took any thing for cholesterol. this was before any history questions were asked. then the person said oh your old enough they will do a work up anyway. i ask a nurse about it and she said it was something new they had started about 6 months before. what would statins have to do with surgery, anyone know.

I don't know about all statins, but the Zocor patient information sheet now recommends stopping Zocor prior to surgery. You can look on their web site. It states: "Also, since there are no known adverse consequences of briefly stopping therapy with ZOCOR, treatment should be stopped a few days before elective major surgery and when any major acute medical or surgical condition occurs."
