vitamin D question

Postby peter s » Mon Oct 20, 2008 10:07 am

I was just found to have a very low vitamin D level and was prescribed 50,000 IU once weekly. Most of what I can find suggests that this is both appropriate and perfectly safe, but I would be interested in any experiences or thoughts from people here.

Vitamin is an entirely necessary component of good health. It is one of the few (if not the only) vitamins actually stored by the body for future use. People in northern climes have a much higher incidence of deficiency due to the lack of sunlight penetrating the skin (where Vit D is synthesized). Take all you want; it won't harm you and will certainly benefit you. Because Vit D and Vit A are often sold as one supplement, I would caution you to be careful in your selection as too much Vit A CAN be harmful. Pick a sole Vit D product. Vit D and Magnesium seem to be two of the most often reported deficiencies among Statinized people. You may also want to get a Magnesium absorption test to see how your Mag levels are holding up.

The 50,000 IU prescription pill is Vitamin D2 only, no A. Obviously it is a very large dose relative to typical supplementation, but on the other hand it seems toxicity in nearly all cases involves an even higher level on a sustained basis.

Peter,

take a look at http://www.spacedoc.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=1278

Adec gives a good account of D2 and D3 and the difference between what your body needs.

My wife and I each take around 4800 IU of Vit D3 (cholecalciferol) daily.
We have found it difficult to source D3 here in the UK so I import from the US: *www.thewayup.com (Healthy Origins 120 x 2,400 IU Softgels)

Peter: Here is another link with some useful info on Vit D's contribution to our over health along with a few reasons to avoid a flu shot and up your Vit. D intake instead.

My MDA doc recommended that I take a daily vitamin high in vitamin B and D, along with my daily meds...

Hi Peter S.

Regarding your prescription for vitamin D.....Last December I too was found to be seriously deficient in vitamin D. The dr prescribed 50,000 IU's of Vitamin D weekly for 12 weeks. Thereafter, I was to take 1000 IU's of D3 daily. I have doubled that to 2,000 because I barely made the minimum acceptable level after 12 weeks of loading dose therapy.
This I will tell you, just as the doctor said, after about 3 to 4 months I felt totally different. The overall aches and pains disappeared. Now I still have definite muscle problems in my neck, shoulder, etc., but I know the generalized pain was due to vitamin D deficiency.

Good luck and I hope you feel better after your treatment too. Remember it takes awhile, probably 3-4 months to start feeling better!

Biologist: In resp to your comment on the Thyroid thread:

This is just another write-up on Vit D's importance to overall health.
