Over 70, stay away from statin drugs.

Postby gotts1936 » Sat May 24, 2008 1:46 pm

I retired at 68 years old and was not put on Lovastatin until I was 70 years old. Now I am practically disabled. My recommendation to those who are 70 years old or older and have survived without any statin drugs is to tell your doctor to go to hell! I know some of you may not be effected by a statin drug, but do you want to take that chance? If you made it to 70 without any, so called, medication why rock the boat?
Good luck,
gotts

My cousins 86 yr old mother has a "senile" disease similar to Altzheimers. But is it a senile disease or not.?..He was saying her memory was getting worse..I asked him if she was on statins..He said yes..I told him to take her off them . What good is statins # 1 for a woman and #2 at 86 yrs old? ...Know what? He took her off 6 months ago and her memory has improved a lot...least she doesn't get belligerant anymore....what does that tell you folks?

statin drugs

Catspajamas, The problems us older citizens have is doctors, for some crazy reason, want us to meet the drug company guidelines for twenty and thirty year old youngster's and its killing us. If you are 70 years old and a doctor is trying to lower your blood pressure 120/80 is stupid, period.
Am I wrong?

Doctors tend to put their patients, young or old in the same slot....I think a lot of elderly patients have side effects to most drugs they are on and the dr's blame something else and give them another pill....When I worked in a nursing home I saw a lot of this...you wouldn't believe some of the meds people were on...If a persons bl pressure was 90/40 you sure as heck wasn't going to give them a b/p pill to lower it even more that day. I held meds back a lot...And they kept a lot of them doped up if they were the least bit noisy...such a shame to treat our elderly that way.All of us are going to have to be more out going when we go to the Dr. Research a new pill before you fill the prescription...I always ask the pharmacist..He knows a lot more about meds than dr's do....I feel somethimes the dr's order stuff and they don't know beans about it...A so called cholesteral specialist got very mad at me when I refused to take yet another statin....I walked out of his office and never went back...He never even listened to me I don't think and laughed when I said I had periferal neuropathy from zocor....Sure would like to warn all that goes to him.about his attitude....sorry, but I am gabby today...

statin drugs

catspajamas, I love you when you are gabby because you make a lot of sense. All of us 70+ year olds , me included, should throw our drugs in the toilet. We should eat what we want, drink what we want, smoke what we want and end our lives by laughing at the drug companies. I still eat raw hamburg, smoke cigars and drink alcohol. Except for the leg muscle damage to my legs by lovastatin I feel great. Screw them all!

Is McCain’s sleep disturbances caused by his Statin medication? Ambien is a very powerful drug.

Bradford, you have a good point, but I don't care because I am not going to vote this year. The choice between a liberal (McCain), a socialist (Clinton) or a marxist (Obama) makes me feel like throwing up. Sorry, for the political junk, but just you mentioning the name McCain upset me.

bradford, I agree it would important to know how stain drugs may have effected our political leaders, but unfortunately, the medical profession refuses to acknowledge that statin drugs are dangerous. Their standard response appears to be, " No, it was not the statin drug, it was because of your age ", or they blame it on alcohol abuse or smoking. Whatever the medical profession chooses to ignor they blame on alcohol, smoking or age. Most doctors believe that the "good" statin drugs do, outweigh the risk of their patients becoming disabled.

Hi there gotts,

I really wish I could disagree with your last statement especially the:-

"Most doctors believe that the "good" statin drugs do, outweigh the risk of their patients becoming disabled."

But alas there is no contest as that is the view of many a Doctor :x

All the best

Allen :-)

I had to helplessly watch my wife demolish a garden shed and remove all detritus from our garden yesterday although she is damaged from cancer ops and radiotherapy.

Thanks "scientific medicine" for disabling me.

Brian,

feeling helpless is a terrible thing for either a man or a woman. Your wife knows that you would have done that job yourself if you were able to, the main thing is that you are both there for each other through the ups and downs, and from what you just mentioned you both have had more than your fair share of downs

Taking this medication has certainly screwed everyone's lives up here, don't let it make you feel bad when you can't do things because you would do it if you could, but this medication has made you too ill at the moment.

All the best Mate,

Allen :)

Thanks Allen. My wife is very supportive, bless her, and has come to terms with my dilapidated state much better than I. She has a good friend, recently widowed and very energetic (one could say "driven") who lives close by and helps out. But you know what us blokes are like with our dumb masculine pride...

However, as she says, "this is better than the alternative" - we're both still alive and kicking!!!

Brian, my husband has rheumatoid arthritus and he has had to accept his being unable to do the things that he always did. He was a very strong man...Drove trucks, for a living and loaded semi's ...It was very hard for him but he has gradually learned to accept what he can and cannot do....You will too....Now, being I am a casualty of this statin thing and my muscles and nerves don't want to work either we are a good pair...we laugh sometimes...Our grand daughter graduated from high school yesterday and we had to sit in the disability section as we couldn't climb bleachers....Just another thing we had to accept but when you look around as see people much worse than us...we are grateful.....hope you gain some strength and your abilities back.....take care

catspajamas, love your comments. My wife has always said that as long as we each have, at least, half a brain or body everything will be fine because two halfs equal one whole brain or body and we will survive.

I like Bradford's suggestion; actually, I would like ALL our congressional staff to be PRESCIRBED Statins. We would have a solution AND legal reparation within two years.
