Age of the injured?

Postby BSGfan » Sat Mar 15, 2008 12:25 am

My impression reading the posts here on this board is that most of the posters are elderly, in the 60s, 70s, or over, giving credence to the notion that the mechanism of damage is statin use exacerbating age related depletion of coenzyme q-10 levels.

I was thinking a poll might be useful. Me, I'm in my very late forties and my difficulties are fortunately comparatively mild compared to some I've read on this board.

I was 43 when I started the statin....damage began 8 weeks later. I am 50 now, and still dealing with permanent nerve and muscle problems.

I have read accounts of those in their 20s with damage.

I will be 51 tomorrow - have been off statins for 3.5 years and took them for 3 years, so I was in my mid-40's when the awful journey began.

I am much better and feel like I am living a full life, but if any of my supplements are changed or new ones added things can go back to pain/weakness in a matter of days for me.

I was around 55 when I was put on them, the only risk factor was I am a smoker and had high cholesterol, NO heart disease in our family at all. I am 61 now.

The whole time I was on them, I kept saying "Mama wasn't in this kind of shape in her 80's, what is WRONG with me?" Mama never had all these problems! Why am I?"

statin drugs

Postby gotts1936 » Sat Mar 15, 2008 10:09 am

I had high cholestrol levels from, at least, 53 years old to 68 years old, but refused to take any drugs. At, 69 years old and retired, I became stupid and let my new Doctor talk me into taking Lovastatin. 7 weeks later I was having leg pains. My new doctor said, "You are just having growing old pains". About six months later, he said, " you know. You might be having a reaction to Lovastatin ". And, took me off the poison. I am now 71 years old and leg muscles still hurt. I am taking COQ10 and L-Carnitine everyday.

I was 46 and took the poison for 10 months. I have been off of it for 7 months and continue to have problems. Supplements are helping but it is a slow recovery, seems like two steps forward and one step back!

My Bill was started on Lovastatin at age 59 after having a stroke. He began having pain in his shoulder at 63, started having severe headaches and muslce pain all over his body two months ago at 64. Has always done hard physical work with no other health problems until now, he is disabled and has not resumed his work.

Started statins at age 46. Took them for 30 DAYS! Went from statin myopathy to full blown muscular distrophy (mitochondrial myopathy). Just keep slowly getting worse. Different drugs help off and on but I have to keep adjusting and changing constantly.. I'm 51 now, and feel 80. So I do not believe that this is just affecting the old..
