Crestor and Peripheral Neuropathy

Postby cinbad » Tue Feb 19, 2008 2:47 pm

I am new to this site but not the the debilitating side effects of Crestor. I took 10mg. daily for about 6 yrs and like a lot of people I never connected the subtle aches and pains with Crestor. I slowy developed neuropathy in my feet to the point where it is very painful to walk. Along with that came extreme muscle pain and cramping in my legs, thighs and hips. All was related to my doctor who had never even heard of peripheral neuropathy. I finally saw a neurologist in Oct 2004 and because I admitted I drank a few beers a day he immediately blamed alcohol abuse as the cause of all my problems. I quit drinking alcohol immediately but my condition worsened. In Dec.2006 my wife read a book written by Dr. Christine Northrup and a chapter in her book listed statin drugs as a cause of neuropathy among other things. This lead me to the internet and alll the wonderful websites like this one. I stopped taking Crestor in Jan 2007 along with all the other prescription drugs my doctor kept prescribing for my myriad of complaints. At different times I was taking Vioxx,Celebrex,Gababentin,Quinnine,Nexium,Tegretol,Arthrotec,Liptor,Zocor,Demerol and Oxycontin. Today I don't and won't take any prescription drug. I do take L-proline,L-lysine,acety-l-carnitine,alpha lipoic acid,CoQ10, liquid magnesium-calicium,vitamin C,omega3 fish oils etc. My doctor doesn't have a clue as to the damage that taking statin drugs can cause nor does the so called specialist the neurologist that at least knew what neuropathy was. I should mention that I underwent 3 unnecessary surgeries on my feet before I was diagnosed with the neuropathy. I have mostly recovered from all the muscle pain but the neuropathy persists. I am currently using a device called the ReBuilder that I found online. I have been using this device faithfully for 4 months but alas no positve results yet but at least my condition seems to have stalled. The support staff at the ReBuilder site are great. If I have missed anything, that is if anybody out there knows of any possible treatments for neuropathy please post to this site.

PN

Postby vipergg22 » Tue Feb 19, 2008 10:48 pm

Welcome to PN club , i know your pain . Took lipitor for 3 years and it gave a severe case of PN in both feet that has never resolved itself even after quitting . If you quit early you may recover , if you have extended periods on statins then it is less likely . One of the worse things you can get because it is with you 24 hours a day and interferes with your sleep and just about everything you do. I am only 50 years old and I'm really worried I won't be walking in 10 years with this affliction . Don't know what the answer is other than I wish I had never taken statins . won't ever touch another one I know that .
