A new statin?

Postby Cat Mom2 » Wed Jan 09, 2008 12:07 am

Found this on another board.. seems they are trying to come up with a new statin drug...

"I have a frind working at a testing clinic for new drugs (you know, the kind that pays you to be a guinea pig). He says they are testing a New statin that is not suppose to have any of the side effects of the current statins.

I'll see what I can find out and post more later."

So, are the now admitting there are side effects or is that patent for the one with COQ-10? I feel sorry for that friend they mentioned..

Hi Cat Mom 2,

Maybe this is the drug in question?

The Pill That Can Almost Halve Your Cholesterol in Two Weeks

Scientists have created a cholesterol-busting pill which they say could help thousands of patients who are unable to take statins.
The tablets -- codenamed KB2115 -- could be on the market in as little as three years.
In tests on humans, one tablet a day for two weeks was enough to cut cholesterol levels by 40 percent.
The researchers hope that KB2115 could be used as a substitute for statins by patients who suffer side effects, such as muscle weakness and liver problems.
The drug could also be more useful to women, who appear to gain little benefit from taking statins. Both drugs lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes by reducing the build-up of cholesterol -- a waxy, fat-like substance -- in the arteries.
Better drugs to reduce cholesterol could stop these two conditions killing thousands of people every year.
Developed by scientists at Swedish pharmaceutical firm Karo Bio, KB2115 speeds up the removal of cholesterol from the body.
Crucially, the drug -- which mimics the cholesterol-lowering effect of hormones produced by the thyroid gland -- did not cause the heart problems seen with other similar prototype medicines.
Nor were any other major sideeffects seen, the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reported.
Tests on animals also showed that at higher doses KB2115 speeds up the metabolism, cutting the risk of obesity and diabetes as well as lowering cholesterol.
The researchers, who so far have tested the drug on just 24 patients, are about to start a larger scale study using more than 170.
This will look at whether giving the drug in conjunction with statins has a greater effect on cholesterol than taking either drug alone.
Although several years' more research is needed, the drug could be on the market as early as 2011.
Dr. John Baxter of the University of California, who carried out the research in conjunction with Swedish scientists, said there was a pressing need for new cholesterol-busting drugs.
He said: "In spite of today's therapies for heart attack and stroke, there are more than a million heart attacks a year in the U.S. We need other types of drugs.
"Using thyroid mimics is an entirely different approach and I think one with great promise for treating high cholesterol -- and probably other conditions such as obesity and diabetes."
